Nicholas DeBendictis Awarded for Environmental Achievements; PSC Chairman Receives Community Leadership Award from Riverbend BRYN MAWR, Pa. May 22, 2000--Nicholas DeBenedictis, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Philadelphia Suburban Corporation (PSC) was recently honored by Riverbend, a nonprofit environmental organization, for his many contributions in the areas of environmental protection and conservation. Riverbend president Adrian Castelli, as well as the Honorable James F. Seif, secretary of the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection, and Brian T. Castelli, chief of staff to the Assistant Secretary of Energy, presented DeBenedictis with the Community Leadership Award at the Riverbend Millennium Gala.
DeBenedictis has served as Chairman of PSC, one of the nation's largest investor-owned water utilities, since May 1993. During his tenure, PSC's primary subsidiary - Philadelphia Suburban Water Company (PSW) - has been recognized by state and Federal agencies, as well as other organizations, for its innovative watershed protection program and commitment to water quality.
Riverbend has made tremendous strides to protect the environment and promote awareness in this area, said DeBenedictis. It is a great pleasure to be honored by an important organization like Riverbend which is working to preserve our natural resources.
Riverbend is a nonprofit organization based in Gladwyne, PA, dedicated to stimulating an awareness, appreciation and understanding of the total environment, and to preserving a natural wildlife habitat.
Prior to joining PSC, he spent three years as Senior Vice President of Corporate and Public Affairs for Philadelphia Electric Company (PECO), a $4 billion nuclear utility. In addition, DeBenedictis held the position of president of the Greater Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce. He also served in two cabinet positions in Pennsylvania government: Secretary of the Department of Environmental Resources and Director of the Office of Economic Development, and was a senior official with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
DeBenedictis received a Bachelor's degree in business administration and a Master's degree in environmental engineering and science from Drexel University. He serves on the Board of Directors for many regional businesses, economic and environmental organizations and has received numerous awards for public service.
PSC serves more than 1 million residents in Delaware, Chester, Montgomery, Bucks and Berks Counties in Pennsylvania.
