Nicholas DeBenedictis Named Chairman of the Greater Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce BRYN MAWR, Pa. Nov. 2, 2000--Nicholas DeBenedictis, chairman and CEO of Philadelphia Suburban Corporation (NYSE:PSC), was recently named chairman of the board of the Greater Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce (GPCC) at the Chamber's 200th Annual Meeting.
In this position, DeBenedictis will help the Chamber develop regional programs and bring public policy to the state level.
DeBenedictis served as GPCC president from 1986 through 1989. During his term, he successfully designed and implemented various economic and business development programs to service the Chamber's growing small business membership.
DeBenedictis also represented the regional business community before local, state and federal legislative bodies. While serving as GPCC president, overall membership increased to more than 5,500 businesses, putting it among the five largest in the nation.
The Greater Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce is a vital resource for businesses throughout the Philadelphia region, said DeBenedictis. I am extremely proud to be part of this important organization and look forward to my term as chairman.
DeBenedictis succeeds John Binswanger, president of the Binswanger Corporation, who is finishing his year-long term as chairman.
I was fortunate to have followed Nick into my current position, said Chamber President Charlie Pizzi. Having Nick pave the way was a real advantage. To have him as chairman of the Chamber will position our organization for greater regional cooperation and enable us to grow.
DeBenedictis currently serves as chairman of PSC, one of the nation's largest investor-owned water utilities. Prior to joining PSC in 1992, he spent three years as senior vice president of Corporate and Public Affairs for PECO Energy, a $4 billion nuclear utility.
He also served in two cabinet positions under Pennsylvania Governor Richard Thornburgh from 1979 to 1986: secretary of the Department of Environmental Resources and director of the Office of Economic Development, and was a senior official with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
DeBenedictis holds a bachelor's degree in Commerce and Engineering and a master's degree in Environmental Engineering and Science from Drexel University.
DeBenedictis serves as chairman of the Pennsylvania Business Roundtable, a statewide business group that is developing public policy in areas such as education, economic development, health care and the environment that will help Pennsylvania businesses compete in the world economy and provide a high quality of life for the state's citizens.
In addition, he serves on the board of directors for many regional businesses, economic, environmental and academic organizations and has received numerous awards for public service.
