WRA highlighted several of the utility's accomplishments that resulted in its decision to award Aqua including the on-line publication of its first Sustainability Report; the installation of a one megawatt solar farm at its Ingram's Mill water treatment plant, which produces about 30 percent of the electricity needed to power the plant and feeds excess power into the grid on peak hours in the summer; its leadership position in replacing aging distribution system infrastructure, thereby reducing the impact of main breaks and water loss; the development of an award-winning Asset Information Management System to track its infrastructure and prioritize water main replacement; and the consistent reduction of its fuel usage and emissions over the last three consecutive years—most recently marked by a 10 percent reduction in average fuel usage.

"It's great to be recognized by an organization like WRA for our efforts to ensure the sustainability of our business," said DeBenedictis. "It's particularly meaningful to receive this award as we celebrate our 125th anniversary. The solar farm, our capital improvement program, which is strategically replacing the oldest parts of our distribution network and other key infrastructure, as well as our success in reducing our carbon footprint through reduced fuel usage, are among those things that will contribute to our sustainability."

Aqua serves approximately 1.4 million people in 30 counties throughout Pennsylvania including approximately 1 million in southeastern Pennsylvania.
