Aqua Pennsylvania's Southeastern Pennsylvania Reservoirs Remain Near Full While Western Counties Enter Drought Watch

July 20, 2012

BRYN MAWR, Pa.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Aqua Pennsylvania, Inc. (Aqua) reported today that the 10-billion-gallon reservoir system in southeastern Pennsylvania where it serves about 1 million people is at 98 percent of capacity.

Company President Steve Tagert said, "We are fortunate that Southeastern Pennsylvania is faring better than Western Pennsylvania where they are under a drought watch. Our two largest reservoirs are at or near full. The Green Lane Reservoir which holds 4.4 billion gallons of water is full and our Springton Reservoir, which holds 3.5 billion gallons, is at 95 percent capacity. While usage is up, it has been no higher than it normally is during the summer months when customers are using more water to irrigate lawns, wash cars, fill and top off swimming pools, and for recreational activities."

Tagert warned that even with the company's bountiful reserves in southeastern Pennsylvania customers should be responsible with their water usage. "We are well positioned to serve the essential and recreational needs of our customers, but we always want them to keep in mind that we are providing a limited natural resource that should not be wasted or taken for granted," said Tagert. "An extraordinary dry spell coupled with the heat we are experiencing could turn the tables."

Aqua operates five reservoirs in southeastern Pennsylvania, which collectively hold approximately 10 billion gallons of water. While its largest western Pennsylvania operation in and around the City of Sharon receives surface water, as does the Borough of Emlenton, the remainder of the systems rely on groundwater.

Aqua provides water and wastewater services to approximately 1.4 million people throughout 30 Pennsylvania counties with the bulk of its customers in southeastern Pennsylvania.
